When our brothers and sisters abuse, neglect or take advantage of us it is hard to believe that goodness exists within them. Our defenses go up. We declare they are not our friends or lovers. We exclaim that real love wouldn’t do such a horrible thing. Despite the desire to “shut down” and “shut out” the other person “reach up” and “reach in” with acts of compassion. Our enemy today could be our friend tomorrow.
