The old saying goes a picture is worth a thousand words. Clip art illustrations are pre-drawn pictures to help you the do-it-yourselfer decorate your documents or material.
How do I use Clip Art?
The pre-drawn art pictures are clipped, scanned or pasted onto a flyer, bulletin, newsletter or other material you choose to help you the do-it yourselfer decorate your documents.
How do I use People of Colour Illustrations: Klip-Klik Art?
Booklets
Images can be copied, rendered, cut and pasted in your documents. See helpful hints below. The books can also be used as a reference guide for the CD image codes.
Software
Each image file can be utilized with many graphic or text software products including Microsoft Word, Harvard Graphic, PhotoShop, and Quark. The images can be imported into your document with the following steps:
- Place People of Colour Illustrations Klip~Klik Art Disc One or Two in the CD-ROM drive.
- Open software that you will use to create your document.
- Click "Insert" from the Main Menu of the software.
- Navigate to "Picture - From File".
- An 'Insert Picture' dialog box should appear.
- Select "All Files" in the File of Type‚ drop down and your CD ROM drive from the Look in‚ drop down in the dialog box.
- A list of available filenames should appear in the box on the left.
- Disk One - Select image number from box on left that corresponds to
filename code definitions outlined on the back of the CD jewel case (i.e. HV1n1p1). Previews of the images should appear in the adjacent box to the right. Click "Insert" or double click on the filename. Image will appear in the document.
- Disk Two - Click "Photo-cd" folder and "Image" folder. Image filenames
will appear in box on left (Img0001). Image number corresponds to thumbnail
code numbers on the CD jewel case (Img0099 = 99). Previews of the images
should appear in the adjacent box to the right. Click "Insert" or double
click on the filename. A 'Photo CD Filter' dialog box will appear. Adjust
resolution and orientation as desired. Click "OK". Image will appear in
the document.
- Manipulate inserted image as desired using tools available with your software (i.e. Select "Format". Navigate to "Picture". Adjust size, position, color, lines, wrapping and picture as desired).

Got any tips on using clip art?
- Make a small sketch of the document you want to create
- Enlarge to actual size complete with art and words
- Pick text/word style
- Art can break up text for eye relief
- The eye is drawn to simple space
- Never set an article in all uppercase
- Borders and backgrounds set off important information
- White space is good
- Limit word type to one or two per document
- Change size and weight to create variety in type
- Headlines in color slow the eye-avoid
- Establish overall image and convey information
- Art can lead the eye
